Summiting Uhuru Peak – What to Expect on the Last Day

A practical guide to summit night, Uhuru Peak and the long descent from Kilimanjaro.

Summit night usually begins around midnight after a short rest at the high camp. Climbers move slowly in darkness using headlamps and warm layers. The ascent is physically and mentally demanding because of cold, wind, loose ground and low oxygen. Depending on the route, climbers first reach Stella Point or Gilman’s Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Time at the summit is brief and controlled according to weather and health. The group then descends to the high camp for rest and food before continuing to a lower camp. Summit day can be very long, so pacing, hydration, guide instructions and honest communication are essential.
